A new step forward in temperature‑controlled rail transport
We have successfully completed a series of tests with an innovative solution for temperature-controlled rail transport. Since November 2025, ten extensive test runs have confirmed that temperature-controlled rail transport can be made more reliable, safer and more sustainable.
The initial results are very encouraging and underline the solution’s potential within our intermodal network. Based on these outcomes, a phased rollout across selected international routes is being prepared.
How the solution works
The system can best be compared to a dynamo integrated into a rail wagon. A hydraulic unit mounted on the wagon’s axle generates electricity as the train moves. This energy is stored in a battery located beneath the wagon and is used to power the refrigeration units.
During one of the tests, the system maintained the required temperature for up to 14 hours using only self-generated energy. Each unit is capable of cooling two 45-foot containers simultaneously, using electricity produced during rail transport itself.
Key benefits for temperature-controlled transport
- Reduced reliance on diesel
Cooling is primarily powered by self-generated electricity, reducing the need for diesel. - Automatic energy management
The system prioritises generated and stored energy. If this is temporarily insufficient, it automatically switches to diesel to guarantee continuous cooling. - Real-time monitoring
Energy generation, battery status and performance are monitored in real time, allowing continuous optimisation.
These features enhance operational reliability while contributing to lower emissions and greater control over temperature-sensitive flows.
A European first
With this innovation, we are proud to be the first logistics service provider in Europe to introduce this solution in temperature-controlled rail transport. It reflects our ambition to respond to evolving market needs while translating sustainability into practical solutions.
In 2026, three units will be deployed on intermodal routes connecting Romania, Turkey and Italy within our Chemicals segment. From 2027 onwards, the solution will also be available for Healthcare logistics.
The successful testing clearly demonstrates how innovation and sustainability are already shaping the logistics of tomorrow.
