Pilot project with spill trailer and emergency canopy for extra safety

Sometimes incidents can occur quite suddenly. Great caution is required, certainly in handling chemical goods, which is why we want to be prepared at all times. Our employees and customers know that safety is paramount in our operations and that we are always looking for ways to further increase it.

Spill trailer
Over the past months, we have invested in additional safety features specifically for our chemical site in Winterslag that will protect our employees, goods of our customers and buildings even better.
Benjamin Hermans, Warehousing Business Unit Manager, explains: “We discovered a few years ago that a dangerous situation can arise if an incident takes place that requires evacuation. We found that it was difficult to access the materials present in the evacuated hall that we would need to clean up a leak. A different and better approach was needed. Which is why we installed a so-called spill trailer at the site. This is a specially equipped trailer, parked at a fixed location on the site, and which is always accessible, even during evacuation. The spill trailer contains all the materials needed in the event of an incident.”

Emergency canopy roofing

“This spill trailer is in close proximity to our – also newly acquired – emergency canopy roof. This is a kind of containment system built into the ground with a canopy roof covering it. In the event of a chemical leak, the leaking trailer can be placed under this canopy,” Benjamin Hermans adds. This contains the release of the chemical substance and ensures that no soil or environmental contamination will take place. “The spill trailer and the emergency canopy roofing are currently installed at Winterslag, and options are now being explored for applying both of these measures to our other Chemicals sites.”
