Counterfeit medicines are a globally growing problem.

In order to prevent fake pharmaceutical products penetrating the legal supply chains, many countries are implementing ‘serialization’: each saleable package is assigned a unique identifying number. In the EU, the deadline for implementation is 9 February 2019.

Given the complexity of the rules and procedures, compliance with serialization is a challenging process for all pharmaceutical manufacturers (and their CMOs). Many fear they won’t make the deadline. Involving their logistics service providers in the serialization effort at an early stage can speed up and smoothen the transition. For less current medicines, produced in smaller batches, manufacturers can even rely on specialized 3PLs to manage the whole serialization process, including the communication with the European data ‘Hub’.

This paper first outlines the reasons why serialization is introduced and how the system works; it then explains how involving the logistics service providers can help manufacturers and CMOs to make the deadline; finally, it shows how 3PLs can transform the challenges of serialization into opportunities, creating added value and saving costs.
